Alice von Maltzahn

Wendt+Friedmann is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition BUILT by the British artist Alice von Maltzahn.
Alice von Maltzahn was born in 1983 in Oxford and studied in London at Wimbledon School of Art and at Kensington and Chelsea College London and at the Ruskin School of Drawing at Oxford University. Paper is the medium used by the artist – both for her drawings and also in an object-related sense.
Taking natural forms such as trees, bird’s nests and bones and diverse types of spaces as her starting points, von Maltzahn converts what is seen into abstract forms using the methods of drawing and cut-out.
In her cut-outs, the artist focuses on removing certain surfaces, on the repetitive quality of her approach, and on the modification of materials in the working process. In fact, energy transfers are what result here. „I’m interested in creating a positive image from a largely negative space, cutting away the paper as much as the material will allow, leaving only what is necessary to hold the paper together“.
The result of this is, I think, fragile but also solid in shadows and space. At the end of the cutting stage, a number of layers of perforated paper are laid on top of one another, which results in an object-like structure of superimposed surfaces. The white paper implies something pure, virginal, and a very tender and aesthetic surface is created. The artist generally draws with graphite. The strategies employed here are similar to those used in the cut-outs: they serve as a foundation for seeking and identifying forms and energies and for arranged patterns,layerings and spatial illusions. Alice von Maltzahn’s work is a process-defined form of searching for forms of expression.

Alice von Maltzahn, geb. 1983 in Oxford, studierte in London an der Wimbledon School of Art, Kensington, Chelsea College London und der Ruskin School of drawing, Oxford University in Oxford.
Papier ist das Medium der Künstlerin, sowohl zeichnerisch als auch objektbezogen.
Ausgehend von Formen der Natur wie Bäume, Vogelnester oder Knochen, aber auch Räumen verschiedenster Art, abstrahiert von Maltzahn das gesehene und transformiert es mit den Mitteln der Zeichnung und des Cutouts.
Bei den Cutouts fokussiert sich die Künstlerin auf das weglassen von Flächen, das repetitive ihrer Handlung, die Veränderung des Materials während des Arbeitsprozesses. Im eigentlichen Sinne sind es Energiebewegungen, die daraus entwachsen.
“Ich bin interessiert an der Kreation eines positiven Raumes aus einer undefinierten Fläche, schneide das Papier soweit weg, wie es mir das Material erlaubt, nur das stehen lassend, was unbedingt zum Zusammenhalt der Gesamtform gehört.
Das Resultat ist zerbrechlich, aber stabil genug im Zusammenhang von Schatten und Raum.”
Mehrere Lagen des perforierten Papiers werden am Ende des Schneidens übereinander gelegt, so dass ein objektartiges Gebilde von überlagerten Flächen entsteht. Das weiße Papier impliziert etwas reines, jungfräuliches, eine sehr zarte und ästhetische Oberfläche wird geschaffen.
Die Zeichnungen der Künstlerin sind meistens mit Graphit ausgeführt. Hier werden ähnliche Strategien wie bei den Cutouts verfolgt, sie dienen als Transportbasis für das Suchen und Finden von Formen und Energien, für arrangierte Muster, Schichtungen oder räumlichen Illusionen. Alice von Maltzahn’s Werk ist eine durch die Arbeit definierte Form der Suche nach Formen des Ausdrucks.
